Clueless was an upcoming mystery drama television based on the 1995 flick Clueless by Amy Heckerling. The series has been in development since 2020. It finally got picked up on August 14, 2020 by Peacock television.[1] But on May 14, 2021, it was announced that Peacock had dropped the series and it was going back into development, with no network attached.[2] The script was written by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey, and as of now the series is in development hell.
Plot
Clueless is described as “a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latte and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans. How does Dionne deal with the pressures of being the new most popular girl in school, while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend?”

On October 17, 2019, it was announced by Deadline that a Clueless reboot series was in the works at CBS TV Studios. The executive producers on the new Clueless were American Gothic and No Tomorrow creator Corinne Brinkerhoff and her development executive Tiffany Grant via Brinkerhoff’s overall deal at CBS TV Studios, as well as Robert Lawrence, who was a producer on the Clueless movie.[1]
After being in development for almost a year, it was announced that Peacock had picked up Clueless for a series order on August 14, 2020. But on May 14, 2021, just nine months after a mystery reboot of the 1995 cult film landed at Peacock, the NBCUniversal-backed streamer has passed on further developing the comedy. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the title remains a valuable one for producers CBS Studios, with the ViacomCBS-backed outlet already planning to try its hand at redeveloping a potentially different update of the film that starred Alicia Silverstone and Stacey Dash.
The project sold to the Peacock in August 2020 and was set up there before Frances Berwick and Susan Rovner gained oversight of Peacock as part of their sprawling content portfolio. Sources note Rovner and Berwick recently reviewed multiple scripts in Peacock’s development pipeline before ultimately passing on several, including Clueless. As of now, it is unclear if any of the current Clueless update will be involved with any future incarnations of the title.[2]
